Our Curriculum

Our focus is play based learning. Play based learning provides opportunities for children to develop a sense of the world around them through inquiry, exploration, interaction and problem solving. Each classroom incorporates play-based learning in an age-appropriate practice based on a child’s age and child development milestones. Along with our play-based learning approach all teachers are certified in “Handwriting Without Tears” program. This program is a multisensory approach that helps children learn skills that prepare them for Prekindergarten and Kindergarten.

Outside play is essential for all ages. Jumping, throwing, climbing and running around boosts gross motor skills and imagination. All classes go out almost every day, weather permitting.

The TwO’s

The 2’s program is the first time many children are in a “school environment.” Separation, socialization and routines are focused on within the 2’s classroom. Our children learn how to be in a group setting, including taking turns and transitioning from “parallel play” to “group play” through such themes-based units as a farm, butterflies, and construction.

The Three’s

The 3’s program involves social and emotional development which are the cornerstone of daily interactions, but there are many more opportunities as a child gets older and ready for exploration and enjoying the world around them. The 3’s play-based learning centers on themes such as, vet clinic, a farmer’s market, a pizza restaurant, and a fire station and incorporates painting, drawing, role-playing, and playdough around the themes to boost fine motor skills.

Pre-kindergarten

The Prekindergarten class builds on the foundation that was created in the 2’s and 3’s and guides the children to incorporate those skills into more complex play, learning and application of the authentic learning that they have been introduced to throughout their three years at SMPS. Our master teachers use “The Handwriting Program” to help introduce uppercase letters by using the multisensory approach of building the letter of the week through straight and curved wooden pieces, chalk, small crayons, playdough and then eventually using crayons and then a pencil. They each the children to tripod grip which is the best way for children to learn to write as it uses the fingers, instead of the wrist and arm which causes “writing fatigue".” Pre-reading and Pre-math skills are incorporated into every part of the Prekindergarten morning. The children work on rhyming, alliteration, the recognition of sound patterns, and predicting in a story. One to one correspondence, number recognition, shapes, patterning, and symmetry are all incorporated in a fun and developmentally appropriate practice.
